‘Sea monster’ found washed ashore on New Zealand beach
MYSTERY surrounds the discovery of a “sea monster” which has washed ashore in New Zealand.
With rows of jagged teeth, a gaping jaw and its guts torn out, the beast’s 30-foot-long mutilated carcass was found half-buried in sand on a popular stretch of coast. It has sparked a frantic guessing game as locals on Pukehina Beach – about 120 miles south-east of Auckland – try to fathom what the creature from the deep is.
Theories range from a killer whale to saltwater crocodile, giant moray eel, some sort of dolphin, or something more prehistoric.
In a YouTube video, Elizabeth Ann asked last month if anyone could identify it, adding: “It has a huge head and teeth with rudimentary flippers.
“It seems about 9m in length but the lower part of the body is probably mainly entrails from an attack.”
Marine mammal expert Anton van Helden dismissed claims it was some sort of dinosaur, saying the animal’s fin structure suggested it was a killer whale, which are common in the Bay of Plenty.
